A renewable energy mix for the districts of the future
September 16, 2025Transforming urban energy systems starts with understanding, through data and maps, how our buildings perform. The ExPEDite project is using advanced GIS techniques and public data to model the building stock of Riga. This approach makes it possible to accurately identify which parts of the city could evolve into Positive Energy Districts (PEDs).
This analysis provides a clear picture of the energy consumption and emissions for each building in the city of Riga. Once calibrated and validated with real data, the model has proven highly reliable as a decision-support tool. Municipal managers can now, for example, visualise which neighbourhoods hold the greatest potential for large-scale energy renovations and future climate-neutral initiatives.
The next steps include refining the model further and integrating its results into the ExPEDite Digital Twin. At the same time, a set of urban energy KPIs is being developed to evaluate the impact of new policies and efficiency measures. Together, these efforts will provide a strong technical foundation for strategies that move cities towards greater efficiency, sustainability, and climate neutrality.
