Stakeholder Engagement – Internal Workshops towards a user-centered innovation ecosystem
April 8, 2025The ExPEDite project has made notable strides over the past few months, marking significant progress in its development of the Design View in Unreal Engine. This work focuses on refining and expanding the project’s capabilities to assist urban planning through immersive 3D environments, enriched with comprehensive data visuals and real-time streaming.
September: Refining Core Elements
By September, the ExPEDite team had focused on enhancing the blueprint system within Unreal Engine. This was a pivotal step in addressing earlier errors and ensuring the accuracy of building structures within the virtual model. Key improvements included fixing degraded buildings and ensuring the Buildings Information Level (BIL) displayed all relevant data, which is crucial for realistic urban planning simulations. Technical discussions with lead partner and pilot owner RTU led to an exchange of knowledge on asset management and the integration of digital twin technologies, which are essential for real-time, data-driven urban management.
The team also tested different georeferencing methods and made significant progress in setting up the protocols for data exchange, paving the way for a more fluid and scalable system. Additionally, work began on adding controls information across various levels of the system, while research into streaming data during runtime was initiated.
October – November: Campus Level Development
October and November saw the team advancing further with the development of campus levels. The work done here contributed valuable insights, particularly regarding the application of polygon decimation techniques and the inclusion of sensor data provided by the pilot site.
The project’s plenary meeting in Athens with the exchange of insights on BIM & Revit modeling, and the implementation of Unreal Engine, provided a valuable knowledge-sharing platform. The discussions centered on optimizing digital twin technologies for urban planning, improving the user interface (UI) in the Design View, and adding data visualization tools, such as data curves, to enhance decision-making.
One major ongoing research focus was on exploring how to integrate more data sets into the Design View, ensuring the platform’s practical applicability for urban decision-makers. Further investigations into urban planning initiatives and other digital twin applications led to new perspectives, particularly for Riga’s city planning framework.
December: Graph Charts and Further Enhancements
As the year drew to a close, ExPEDite made substantial progress on integrating Graph Charts into the Design View. These charts, which display complex datasets visually, play a key role in enabling better decision-making in urban planning. They continue to evolve, with improvements made in terms of interactivity and data presentation. The December work set the stage for more sophisticated data visualizations, which would prove vital for presenting urban metrics in an intuitive and actionable format.

January: Code Optimization and Further Collaboration
In January, the focus shifted towards refining the platform’s backend. The team worked on improving Graph Chart functionality, fixing internal bugs, and enhancing the overall code quality. Another key milestone was the setup of a dedicated level for demonstrating WP4 data at the city level. This will allow stakeholders to visualize large-scale urban data and test scenarios in a more complex urban environment.
Moreover, the team reviewed the platform’s login process, aiming for smoother access and enhanced user security. Immediate actions included refining blueprints, adding more visual data to graphs, and initiating trials on the authorization process. At the same time, the collaboration with Exus, NTUA, and RTU gained momentum, with joint efforts focused on integrating additional data into the Design View. Audio descriptions were also discussed as a potential enhancement for greater accessibility, providing an immersive experience for all users.
Looking Ahead: A Future of Data-Driven Urban Planning
With each milestone, ExPEDite is closer to realizing its vision of transforming urban planning through the power of digital twins. As the project progresses, further improvements are expected in terms of both functionality and user experience. Through collaboration with key partners, stakeholders and continuous refinement, the ExPEDite team is poised to deliver a state-of-the-art solution for smart, data-driven urban development.
