District Heating & Energy Storage Modelling Tool Released
November 28, 2025One outstanding evolution of the technical components presented during the General Assembly of ExPEDite in Bilbao – especially during the technical integration workshops – is the strong alignment of the ExPEDite components architecture with more global approaches related to Digital Twins, like the EU Local Digital Twin (LDT) Toolbox and the Living-in.eu Minimum Interoperability Mechanisms (MIM) 8 – LDT (Work-In-Progress) specifications:

In the context of ExPEDite development phase, the technical partners have followed a similar approach, driven by the MIMs specifications, to build up a suite of components integrated in a Digital Twins platform in order to support the transformation of the Kipsala district in the city of Riga into a Positive Energy District (PED). Now that the ExPEDite technical components are operational, the external stakeholders engagement and the participation of inhabitants through Living Lab activities is accelerating as well as the exploitation plan including replicability enablers. In these perspectives, to facilitate comprehension, dissemination, replicability and sustainability of ExPEDite components, it appears quite relevant to map them within the EU LDT Toolbox.

This mapping of the ExPEDite components within the EU LDT Toolbox Framework clarifies and streamlines mid term exploitation and long term evolution of the implementation, including the possible complementary integration of some of the 11 tools that will be provided by the EU LDT Toolbox.
On short term horizon, for the incremental integrated deployment and the stakeholders engagement through the ExPEDite Living Lab activities, this reference to the EU LDT Toolbox will be complemented by the approach supported by the specification of the MIM8-LDT, aligning the functionalities of a Local Digital Twin in four categories: Awareness LDT, Experimental LDT, Predictive LDT, and Intelligent LDT. To support the progression of the implementation and learning curves related to the ExPEDite DT – from awareness to intelligent category – the MIM.meter methodology will be applied to evaluate the level of compliance with MIM8 (as it has previously been used to evaluate and enhance the level of compliance with MIM1-Interlinking Data , MIM2-Representing Data and MIM3-Exchanging Data ).

The synergies with the driving European initiatives related to Local Digital Twins reinforce the capacity of ExPEDite to achieve its mission for enabling Positive Energy Districts through Digital Twins.
