A renewable energy mix for the districts of the future

Meet ExPEDite @ SCEWC!
September 16, 2025ExPEDite is developing guidelines and tools to evaluate the economic, financial, and risk dimensions of Positive Energy Districts (PEDs). The goal is to provide decision-makers with practical methods to assess costs and benefits, design sustainable business models, and anticipate risks when implementing PED solutions.
The recently published Deliverable D4.3 – Cost-Benefit Guidelines offers a step-by-step framework to apply cost-benefit analysis (CBA) to PEDs, adapted to the complexity of using Digital Twins (DTs) and accounting for long-term impacts.. It introduces indicators for economic, social, and environmental evaluation, discusses how to integrate qualitative and participatory elements, and includes case studies demonstrating how CBA can be applied to real interventions, such as improved air quality or energy savings.
In parallel, a business model approach for PEDs, combining online training with practical workshops has been developed. This helps partners design viable and inclusive business models for solutions such as the Digital Twin, the Living Lab, and the citizen-facing mobile app—bridging theory with practice to ensure that technical innovation is matched by sustainable economic pathways.
Finally, a risk analysis framework has been prepared, mapping nine areas of risk that may affect PED deployment – from governance and financing to social acceptance, environmental KPIs, and systemic design challenges. This framework is being linked with the CBA and business model activities, ensuring that risks are identified early and integrated into decision-making.
Together, these activities are a cornerstone of ExPEDite. By linking technical feasibility with economic sustainability, resilience, and social impact, the toolbox supports cities and stakeholders in scaling up PED solutions with confidence.
