Integrating Mobility into Positive Energy District Planning
December 1, 2025RTU researchers have developed a District Heating and Energy Storage Modelling Tool, a core component of the Positive Energy District Digital Twin framework. The tool enables dynamic simulation, visualisation, and optimisation of district-level heating systems, supporting evidence-based planning for energy-efficient and climate-neutral districts.
Built on System Dynamics modelling, the tool analyses heat production, transmission, thermal storage, and building energy performance. Users can explore how different heating technologies, energy efficiency measures, and storage solutions affect energy demand, emissions, and system costs over time.
The interactive interface allows stakeholders to adjust key technical parameters and run “what-if” scenarios—from insulation upgrades to renewable heat options or waste heat recovery. This supports transparent decision-making and stakeholder engagement during PED co-creation processes.
The model is designed to accept detailed input data — different technological solutions, temperatures and weather conditions, costs, electricity and storage parameters — and can generate outputs such as energy flows, emissions, operational costs and cost-optimal configurations.
