May 5, 2026What does it take to design, manage, and actively participate in a Positive Energy District (PED)? The ExPEDite project is answering this question through a suite of innovative digital solutions—each designed to connect citizens, planners, and decision-makers in the energy transition.
From interactive mobile tools to advanced planning platforms, ExPEDite is building an integrated ecosystem that turns data into action and engagement into impact.
Empowering Citizens: The ExPEDite Mobile App
At the heart of the project lies the ExPEDite Mobile App, designed to actively engage residents and users within a PED. More than just an information tool, the app creates a dynamic space where citizens can collaborate with local authorities and contribute to achieving positive energy outcomes.
Built on principles such as gamification, community participation, and reward mechanisms, the app transforms everyday actions into meaningful contributions. Users can take part in energy-related challenges, complete educational quizzes, and engage in community-driven activities linked to real energy consumption across buildings.
The app also fosters communication and awareness: users can share local news, stay informed about district developments, and provide feedback through surveys. Participation is rewarded through individual and collective points, redeemable via supporting organisations—bridging digital engagement with real-world incentives.
Importantly, the app integrates data from across the ExPEDite ecosystem, making it a central hub for both engagement and insight.

Visualising the Future: The Design View
Planning a sustainable district requires more than static data—it demands immersive understanding. That’s where the Design View comes in.
Developed using advanced 3D technology, this platform enables users to visualise the built environment alongside real-time energy flows. It allows planners and stakeholders to simulate and compare different “what-if” scenarios, exploring how design choices affect energy performance over time.
By combining spatial and temporal analysis, the Design View supports evidence-based urban planning, helping cities move closer to achieving Positive Energy Districts through informed decision-making.

Supporting Decisions: The Decision Support System (DSS)
To complement visual insights, ExPEDite offers a powerful Decision Support System (DSS). This tool enables users to design and evaluate different energy transition pathways tailored to their district.
From building upgrades and renewable energy integration to mobility and district heating strategies, the DSS allows stakeholders to customise scenarios and assess their outcomes. By incorporating cost-benefit analysis, it compares options based on both energy performance and economic viability, helping identify the most effective pathways forward.

Hands-On Innovation: The Energy Modelling Tool
For those ready to dive deeper, the Energy Modelling Tool offers a hands-on experience in district energy planning.
Focused on the Ķīpsala campus, this interactive platform allows users to experiment with different heating technologies and energy storage solutions. By simulating various scenarios, users can explore how system choices influence efficiency, sustainability, and overall performance.
This dynamic environment not only supports technical analysis but also helps users better understand the complexity—and potential—of district-level energy systems.
